How to Help Your Hyperactive Child

Posted on 21 January 2009

Does your child seem to bounce off the walls? Is it difficult to keep your child entertained when they must play inside during poor weather? If your child is hyperactive, you might be concerned that they suffer from hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder. Keep in mind that many children are very active when they are little and outgrow their hyper ways as they grow older. If you are concerned about your child’s hyper ways, consult with their pediatrician to ensure their hyper behavior is not a sign of an underlying condition.

If your child is just hyper and active without any underlying conditions, there are some rather simple steps you cant take to channel their energy in a positive direction. Encourage your child to join an extracurricular activity at school. They can run off some of their energy in a sport or using their brain power to participate in a variety of academic clubs.

For children who are not school age, you can enroll them in preschool sports and activities at a local YMCA or community center. Your small children will be able to interact with other children their age while playing off some of their excess energy. These activities will help your young children to learn how to listen to instructions and rules so that they are better prepared when it is time to attend school.

Take your children for walks or hikes. Interact with your hyper child or children in age appropriate activities that the entire family can enjoy. Channel your child’s excess energy to activities that help the entire family to achieve a higher level of fitness. You will be helping your child while strengthening the family unit.

Enjoy nice days outside with your children. Give them a chance to run off some of their energy by playing in the backyard. Play games such as catch, tag or hide-and-seek with younger children. You can put together a game of flag football or soccer with older kids. There are endless activities from the comfort of your backyard that you can enjoy with your children whether they are hyperactive or not.

Do not make it easy for your children to sit and watch television, play on the computer or play video games. You should have several activities available for your children at all times. They are more likely to be hyper when they are bored and cannot find anything they want to do during the day. Get your children involved in crafts, reading or writing poetry and short stories. These are all relatively quiet ways to entertain your children in a positive way.

Enjoy a game of cards with your spouse and kids. You might think your child will get bored and overactive during the game, however, if they are enjoying the time spent with family, they are more likely to concentrate on playing the game. Playing board games is another way to keep the kids minds’ active while keeping them from bouncing off the walls.

Spend time exercising your children’s minds as well as helping them to remain physically fit. You will help to maintain overall good health for your family while working to divert excess energy if you have hyperactive children.
